A greener environment naturally enhances the quality of life and over the past few years, NTUC FairPrice has partnered with agencies such as the National Environment Agency (NEA) to educate the public on the importance of being environmentally-friendly.
These are some of our initiatives.
Launch of "Why waste plastic bags? Choose reusable bags!" campaign in 2006
In 2006, FairPrice launched its new range of 'Love Nature' recyclable bags in support of the NEA-driven "Why waste plastic bags? Choose reusable bags!" campaign.
The bags are durable, reusable, washable, made of 100% polypropylene, and come in four eye-catching colours - rose, brown, olive green and majolica blue - symbolizing elements of nature: flora, earth, trees and the sea.
In tandem with this campaign, 20 customers who were spotted bringing their own shopping bags to shop at FairPrice were given FairPrice shopping vouchers.
Bring Your Own Bag Day (BYOBD)
Together with other retailers, FairPrice participated in "Bring Your Own Bag Day" spearheaded by National Environment Agency (NEA). BYOBD falls on the first Wednesday of the month and shoppers are encouraged to bring their shopping bags to bag their groceries when they go shopping at participating stores. On 18 April 2007, FairPrice ran a "Love Nature" contest where the best 3 entries won themselves FairPrice shopping vouchers.
To increase the public awareness of BYOBD, FairPrice collaborated with Keppel Corporation on 6 June 2007 to distribute 100,000 free Keppel reusable bags to shoppers when they made a purchase at any FairPrice stores.
In June 2008, BYOBD has been revised for implementation on all Wednesdays.
Green efforts among FairPrice staff
FairPrice has also gone a step further to inculcate a green culture among its staff. FairPrice has sponsored its staff two reusable bags each and encouraged them to shop with the bags.
Recycling bins are also placed in the head office, warehouse and all its branches to encourage staff to recycle used papers and plastic bottles.
FairPrice Green Rewards Initiative
Since July 2007, the daily "FairPrice Green Rewards" initiative was introduced to encourage more shoppers to go green. Customers who brought their own bags were rewarded with a 10-cent rebate for a minimum purchase of S$10. Since its launch, shoppers have benefitted more than S$10,000 per month in Green Rewards rebates.
FairPrice Green Lifestyle Campaign
The FairPrice Green Lifestyle Campaign was launched in June 2009 to commemorate World Environment Day and to promote greater social reposnisbility towards environmental protection. Supported by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) and Philips Electronics Singapore Pte Ltd (Philips), the year-long campaign hopes to heighten awareness of green issues and engage FairPrice's stakeholders, including its customers, employees and the community, to collectively create a bigger impact towards environmental sustainability.
