Cheers paints the town yellow to support Singapore’s YOG bid

SINGAPORE, 2 February 2008 - Cheers, a network of convenience stores by NTUC FairPrice, is supporting Singapore's bid to host the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) 2010 with its "Cheers To Singapore's YOG Bid" rally. Today, sports stars Li Jia Wei, Kendrick Lee and Sun Bei Bei as well as Singapore's young national badminton players kickstarted the rally from Cathay Cineleisure Orchard, encouraging the public to pen their support for the bid on a giant board.

Seven Cheers YOG Advocates wearing YOG-themed T-shirts spread the message to motorists at the traffic junctions along Orchard Road. Forty Cheers staff also distributed 3,000 balloons and stickers along the Orchard Road area to spread awareness and rally support for the bid. Ten cheerleaders ramped up the energy level further with their cheerleading performance. Adding more excitement to the event was a Cheers Hippo bus inviting the public to join in the rally while it plied the Orchard area, making a strong statement with banners and percussionists.

NTUC FairPrice Managing Director (Singapore) Mr Seah Kian Peng said: " This community project underscores Cheers' commitment in supporting the Sporting Singapore Vision and its three key thrusts - Sports Excellence, Sports Participation, and Sports Industry."

"Cheers is a big advocate of sports in Singapore, having supported various sports initiatives such as the Cheers Badminton Series and Cheers Zero Limits Expedition 2006. We hope to do our part to boost Singapore's chances for the bid and inculcate a strong sporting culture in Singapore," he added.

Cheers has been supporting Singapore's YOG bid since late last year when it gave away YOG-themed car decals to motorists who patronised the Cheers and FairPrice Xpress stores at Esso petrol stations. From this Saturday, Cheers will further raise awareness and drum up support for the bid by giving away 40,000 special YOG stickers to customers at all Cheers stores. Staff at Cheers stores will also be wearing YOG-themed badges.
