NTUC FairPrice partners Singapore Red Cross to raise funds to rebuild homes and lives in Japan

- Public encouraged to make donations through NTUC FairPrice's vast islandwide network of outlets

- FairPrice kicks off donation with $20,000

NTUC FairPrice has partnered Singapore Red Cross to rally the community to reach out and help victims of the recent earthquake that struck cities in Japan. Members of the public can contribute their donations at over 250 FairPrice outlets islandwide, including FairPrice supermarkets, FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Xtra, Cheers and FairPrice Xpress. Funds raised for the Japan Disaster 2011 will go towards the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts for survivors. To kick-off the donation drive, NTUC FairPrice is contributing $20,000 towards the Fund.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families who have been impacted by the destruction caused by the earthquake in Japan. In partnering the Singapore Red Cross and extending the donation points through our outlets across Singapore, the community will be able to conveniently make their contributions towards the relief efforts. This will raise essential funds to help the survivors rebuild their homes and lives," said Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice.

In 2009, NTUC FairPrice also led a public donation drive through its stores for the Singapore Red Cross Sumatra Earthquake Appeal. A total of over S$76,000 was raised through FairPrice's efforts including a donation of S$20,000 from the supermarket chain.

"Singapore Red Cross is appreciative of the support rendered by FairPrice in our appeals for funds to aid disaster stricken nations. With such partnerships, it helps to bring our efforts closer to the community." said Christopher Chua, Secretary General, Singapore Red Cross.

The Singapore Red Cross donation tins will be dispatched to all FairPrice stores from 19 March 2011 onwards. The donation drive will end on 13 April 2011.

As a member of the Singapore Compact for CSR, a part of the United Nations Global Compact network, FairPrice is also contributing an additional $10,000 to the rebuilding and relief efforts in Japan through the Japan Platform. Japan Platform is an international emergency humanitarian aid organisation.
