The festive season is all about celebration, and if you’re gearing up for party after party, you’ll want to make sure you’re ready to go the distance!
We asked Lim Zhi Ying, Senior Pharmacist at Unity @ Waterway Point, to share how to best prep yourself for the fun, so you can party hard, stay energised and still feel great the next day. Here’s how to keep the good times rolling without missing a beat.
And we don’t mean with alcohol! Drinking enough fluids maintains energy levels and prevents dehydration, which can result from alcohol consumption. While HealthHub recommends eight glasses (or about two litres of water) a day for most adults, you can meet your liquid goals with foods like porridge and soup, too.
To avoid overeating unhealthy dishes or drinking on an empty stomach, snack on something healthy like a banana. Nuts can also slow alcohol absorption, while antioxidant-rich berries are known to support liver health.
Your liver works harder to process alcohol, so if you’re drinking this festive season, consider supporting it with supplements that contain soya bean phospholipids, milk thistle, dandelion or artichoke leaf. Year-end travel and parties can also disrupt your sleep — natural remedies like valerian root, chamomile and lavender may help calm the mind, while melatonin regulates your sleep cycle.
To stay healthy, vitamin C with zinc can help ward off viruses — especially for kids returning to school — while a multivitamin with B-complex supports energy levels for busy lifestyles. For seniors, glucosamine and calcium supplements may support joint and bone health, which will help you stay active.
As the year winds down and a new work and school year approaches, start easing back into your regular routine. Gradually adjusting your sleep schedule, by going to bed 15 to 30 minutes earlier each night, can help reset your body clock. Staying active during the day and reducing screen time before bed will ensure you’re well-rested and ready to focus at work or in class.
As family members return to their regular routines after the holiday season, it’s natural for some to feel a bit disconnected. This can be especially true for seniors, who may feel socially isolated. To stay engaged, consider joining senior activity centres or community clubs, exploring new hobbies like gardening or meditation, or attending courses through SkillsFuture.
Always consult a doctor or pharmacist before consuming over-the-counter health supplements and herbs.
