Blackcurrant, with its scientific name Ribes nigrum, belongs to the Grossulariaceae family . It is native to the temperate regions of Europe and northern Asia. It became very popular for its medicinal properties.
These small, shiny, black berries are highly appreciated for their sweet and slightly acidic taste. They are eaten alone or mixed with sugar, cream, in ice cream, jams, juices, smoothies, and are also highly appreciated in pastries for sweets, cakes and pies.
