Singapore is celebrating its 58th birthday on 9 August! This year, the National Day public holiday falls right in the middle of the week, on a Wednesday. While we don’t get the luxury of a long weekend to plan a quick getaway, it doesn’t mean that we can’t make the most of this midweek break.
With that in mind, here are some fun activities to do right here on our sunny island that will occupy you on National Day or the weekend leading up to it! There’s something for everyone — whether you’re planning a family-friendly day out, a casual get together among friends or just a cosy day at home before tuning in to the National Day Parade on television.
1. Have fun with the whole neighbourhood at the FairPrice National Day Block Party
Join us on Saturday, 5 August for an afternoon of fun for the whole family as we celebrate Singapore’s birthday with 2 block parties held at Ang Mo Kio and Jurong West!

Drop by the food booths to discover local brands and sample their products. You’ll get to taste delicious treats, from kacang puteh — a traditional and popular snack consisting of mixed nuts — to refreshing beverages and classic childhood snacks.
Best of all, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to win prizes when you take part in our fun games! Stand to win promo codes, shopping bags, FairPrice Housebrand products and more.
Hosted from our roving FairPrice on Wheels trucks, the block party will be bringing daily essentials and housebrand favourites to you. What’s more, special tote bags will be given to shoppers who make purchases above $10 from our mobile store!

2. Cook up a feast inspired by Singapore’s icons and landmarks
If you prefer to spend the National Day public holiday at home, here’s an activity centred around one of the things that Singaporeans love the most: food!

Bring the colour, creativity and flavour to the table with meals that are plated to resemble Singapore’s iconic landmarks, from the Changi Control Tower that greets us each time we leave and return home from our travels, to the Singapore Flyer, the observation wheel that graces our city skyline and offers breathtaking views of the downtown area.
What’s on the menu?
Whip up a visual and literal feast with these recipes:
Appetiser:
Mini Chicken Satay
(Inspired by the Singapore Flyer)
Main Course:
Teriyaki Chicken Rice
(Inspired by the Changi Airport)
Main Course:
Chicken Karaage Bento
(Inspired by the Singa Lion)
Dessert:
Bubur Cha Cha
(Inspired by the Dragon Playground)
This is a great way to get your little ones to help out in the kitchen! They can unleash their creativity when it comes to plating the food, or colouring and shaping the tapioca jelly for the bubur cha cha. Your hard work will be rewarded when you settle down to a scrumptious meal that pays tribute to places that are truly Singapore!

3. Celebrate with a sizzling BBQ party amidst lush greenery
Take your National Day celebration to the great outdoors with a BBQ at one of Singapore’s picturesque parks. And here’s a game changer for your BBQ experience: try a single-use disposable BBQ grill made from eco-friendly materials such as cardboard and natural bamboo!

The CasusGrill™ comes in a handy, portable box that transforms — with a little bit of assembly (that the kids can have fun with!) — into a convenient and easy-to-use BBQ grill.
This innovative invention uses special bamboo charcoal briquettes which do not require a firestarter or lighter fluid. Best of all, there’s no open flame and it produces an even temperature across the grill, so you don’t have to worry about moving the food around to hit those hot spots! Simply light the briquettes, wait a few minutes for the grill to heat up, and you’re ready to cook your favourite sausages, meats and vegetables!
As the grill is able to stay hot for about an hour, it’s best to plan and portion out your food in advance so you can have a smooth and enjoyable BBQ party.
So gather your loved ones and friends, head to the park, and let the aroma of freshly grilled food fill the air as you celebrate National Day surrounded by nature.
You can find the CasusGrill™ at FairPrice Xtra Jurong Point.
