NTUC FairPrice celebrates the official launch of Kang Kar Mall

- Home grown supermarket chain FairPrice fosters greater community bonding and offers convenience to residents

Singapore’s homegrown supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice joins the community at Aljunied GRC to celebrate the official launch of Kang Kar Mall, located in the heart of Hougang Central. The launch of Kang Kar Mall also marks the opening of FairPrice’s new supermarket, as part of its on-going effort to serve the local communities better.

The opening is officiated by the Guest-of-Honour, Mr George Yeo, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Aljunied GRC.

In order to meet residents’ needs in the vicinity, the new FairPrice supermarket is specially designed to feature a larger fresh food section, carrying a greater variety of fresh produce, catering to customers’ discerning needs. Over 50 per cent of the store’s floor space has been dedicated to the fresh food section, with over 1,000 varieties of fresh produce available. One highlight of the fresh area is a butcher section where customers can purchase specific sections of fresh pork by weight. Service staff are also on hand to trim excess fat, should customers choose to do so, thereby providing greater convenience and value-added services to shoppers.

FairPrice at Kang Kar Mall also provides greater convenience to residents here by offering extended shopping hours from as early as 7am till 11pm. The extended shopping hours caters to customers who prefer to shop early in the morning at the start of the day; and to those who enjoy late-night shopping, where the store is less crowded. FairPrice Kang Kar Mall essentially offers the flexibility for customers to shop at their own time amidst busy schedules.

At the same time, the Kang Kar Mall location would also become a focal point for local community bonding where residents can interact, shop and have a hearty meal under one roof. In addition to the supermarket, the Kang Kar Mall store also has a food court operated by Kopitiam which offers a delectable variety of local fare.

“As a trusted and home-grown supermarket retailer, we take pride and great responsibility to fulfill our social mission while remaining relevant and engaged with the community. Many of our stores are situated in the heartlands of Singapore. They are buzzing places of activity and we hope that the new Kang Kar Mall will also become a place for people to interact, shop and also to enjoy a hearty meal,” said Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman, NTUC FairPrice.

A mall naming contest was organized earlier to foster a sense of ownership amongst residents for Kang Kar Mall. The response was overwhelming with more than 2,000 entries. The winning entry, “Kang Kar Mall” was selected based on the rich history of the area, where it used to be a Teochew fishing village before it was demolished to make way for urbanization in the 1980s. The winner, Eunice Aw, 13, was presented with S$1,010 worth of FairPrice shopping vouchers.

“FairPrice is and will always stay connected to the community it serves. We work closely with grassroots organizations and community leaders to see to the needs of the people in each area,” added Mr Ng.

To mark the launch of the Kang Kar Mall store, NTUC FairPrice Foundation donated 1,000 packets of rice to needy families in the Aljunied GRC. Thus far, the FairPrice Foundation has given out S$15 million to the community since 2008, as part of its continuous effort to help the less fortunate and to foster greater community bonding through various community involvements.
