NTUC FairPrice Foundation launches Sports Scholarship for Athletes - Asian Youth Games 2009

- FairPrice supports government’s vision to promote sports excellence among Singaporeans

NTUC FairPrice Foundation, a registered charity wholly funded by home-grown supermarket retailer, NTUC FairPrice, shows its support to the development of local sporting talents by launching the NTUC FairPrice Foundation Sports Scholarship for Athletes - Asian Youth Games 2009. The scholarship is awarded to athletes who excelled at the Asian Youth Games 2009. 

Guest-of-Honour, Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Defence and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), was at the official launch of the scholarship programme to present the awards to scholarship winners. A total of S$108,250 worth of scholarship awards is being given to athletes who won a total of nine Gold, six Silver, and 14 Bronze medals at the Asian Youth Games 2009.

“FairPrice Foundation works with relevant sectors of the community to promote nation building initiatives with the aim of unifying the people and advancing social harmony. Sports is one such platform as it transcends race and religion. We hope that this scholarship programme serves as recognition and motivation for young athletes to excel in their performance,” said Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of NTUC FairPrice and NTUC FairPrice Foundation.

The NTUC FairPrice Foundation Sports Scholarship for Athletes - Asian Youth Games 2009 provides funds to purchase training equipment, tickets to training camps, medical and scientific assistance, as well as coaching lessons, in the relevant sporting discipline.

The foundation strongly supports the government’s vision to promote greater interest in sports among Singaporeans, by showcasing the country’s achievements through sports excellence, sports participation and the sports industry. 

As part of its strategic thrusts to help in nation building and to promote community bonding, NTUC FairPrice Foundation supports major activities and social community projects that cater to Singaporeans at large, to foster closer relationships among the community. The foundation had previously donated S$500,000 in support of the Asian Youth Games 2009.
