Singapore, 14 December 2013 - NTUC FairPrice Share-A-Textbook Project invites the public to collect free textbooks in good condition, this Sunday on 15 December 2013 at any of the four distribution centres - Changkat Changi Secondary School, Gan Eng Seng School, Yio Chu Kang Secondary School and West Spring Secondary School between 9am to 3pm.
With combined efforts of the community, the Project met and exceeded its target of 385,000 textbooks - the highest in 31 years, since the Project started in 1983. Books available for collection include primary school to tertiary level textbooks, storybooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias and assessments books.
Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice, said, "We are very thankful for the support from the community who have come together to generously donate textbooks, especially when we made a call for more textbooks to be donated two weeks ago. This year, we also worked with ExxonMobil to make it even more convenient for the public to donate at Esso service stations. Over these 31 years, we owe the continued success of the FairPrice Share-A-Textbook Project to members of the public, supporting partners and volunteers. We are glad that we are able to work with like-minded people and organizations to make a difference in our community, doing more good deeds as we promote the values of caring, sharing and recycling. Most importantly, through these efforts, we are able to help even more students save on their textbook expenses, where about 20,000 students have been registered under the priority scheme this year."
This year, over 1,000 student volunteers and volunteers from Supporting and Community Partners from 110 organisations assisted in logistics, promotional efforts, mass community collection, sorting and distribution for the FairPrice Share-A-Textbook project.
Some 20,000 students have been registered under the priority scheme this year - an increase of about 10 per cent from last year; who have been shortlisted by Volunteer Welfare Organisations (VWOs) and Community Development Councils (CDCs). These priority students are entitled to select their books a day earlier than the general public.
