FairPrice Share-A-Textbook Project begins distribution of free textbooks this weekend
Singapore, 13 December 2014 – NTUC FairPrice Share-A-Textbook Project invites the public to collect free textbooks, this Sunday on 14 December 2014 at any of the three distribution centres – Changkat Changi Secondary School, Gan Eng Seng School and Yio Chu Kang Secondary School between 9am to 3pm.
With combined efforts of the community, the Project met and exceeded its target of 400,000 textbooks – the highest in 32 years, since the Project started in 1983. Books available for collection include primary school to tertiary level textbooks, storybooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias and assessments books.
Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice, said, “We are sincerely grateful for the community’s support in coming together to generously donate textbooks, especially when we made a call for more textbooks to be donated more than a week ago. Through your kind donations of textbooks, you have helped to lessen the financial burden on low income families, and conserve resources by reusing and recycling textbooks. Over these 32 years, we owe the continued success of the FairPrice Share-A-Textbook Project to members of the public, supporting partners and volunteers. We are glad that we are able to work with like-minded people and organisations to create a better life for the community, doing more good deeds as we promote the values of caring and sharing, and of environmental awareness.”
Over 600 volunteers from over 110 supporting partners and FairPrice staff will come together to help bring the Share-A-Textbook to fruition this year. The volunteers assisted in logistics, promotional efforts, mass community collection, sorting and distribution for the FairPrice Share-A-Textbook project.
Some 20,000 students who have been registered under the priority scheme this year are expected to benefit from the textbooks. These students have been shortlisted by Volunteer Welfare Organisations (VWOs) and Community Development Councils (CDCs) for the scheme and are entitled to select their books before the books are open to the general public.
