NTUC FairPrice is the first supermarket to provide consumers with the option of frozen chicken from Thailand

-FairPrice continues to diversify food sources by providing frozen chicken accredited by Agri-food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore

SINGAPORE, 27 January 2014 - NTUC FairPrice now offers an additional source of halal-certified frozen chicken for consumers from Thailand, becoming the first supermarket to do so, since the suspension of poultry imports from Thailand following widespread outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in Thailand from 2004 to 2008.

Prior to this, FairPrice imported fresh chicken from Malaysia and frozen raw chicken from Brazil - FairPrice is only able to import poultry from AVA approved sources. Earlier in June 2013, AVA lifted the ban on chicken imports from Thailand and approved the import of frozen chicken from selected establishments after thorough checks and inspections. In November 2013, established food company Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods), from Thailand became the first food supplier to be approved by AVA to export frozen chicken to Singapore. Two variants of frozen raw chicken parts from CP Foods - boneless chicken breast and boneless chicken leg - are now available exclusively at all FairPrice stores, including FairPrice Finest and FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets.

Mr Tng Ah Yiam, Managing Director (Group Purchasing, Merchandising and International Trading), NTUC FairPrice, said, "Chicken is very popular in Singapore and a versatile source of protein for many dishes. FairPrice is committed to provide more options for our customers while we continue to further diversify our food sources to ensure greater supply stability of daily essentials. With AVA's accreditation, customers are assured of a high standard of food quality and safety."

As a primary food safety partner with AVA, FairPrice is committed to provide customers with quality products that are safe for consumption. FairPrice also partners AVA in its efforts to bolster food supply resilience and supports various public campaigns to promote alternative forms of food such as frozen meat.

FairPrice has a dedicated team of Food Safety and Quality experts who conduct regular food safety audits at all its stores to ensure that they comply not only with AVA regulations, but also international food safety standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 22000. In 2012, FairPrice was the first supermarket in Singapore to be ISO 22000 certified - a highly rigorous and comprehensive international food safety standard to further validate its food safety efforts.
