FairPrice Share-A-Textbook Project begins distribution of free textbooks this weekend
· Priority students to select books on 12 December 2015, while the general public can collect books on 13 December 2015
· FairPrice achieves its target of collecting 400,000 textbooks this year
Singapore, 12 December 2015 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) invites the public to collect free textbooks as part of the Share-A-Textbook Project, this Sunday, 13 December 2015. The public can do so at any of the three distribution centres – Warehouse Club, Gan Eng Seng School and Yio Chu Kang Secondary School, between 9am to 3pm.
With combined efforts of the community, FairPrice’s heritage Share-A-Textbook Project achieved its target of 400,000 textbooks this year. It has since collected 3.9 million pre-loved textbooks, which goes toward helping low-income families alleviate their financial burdens and save resources through recycling. Books available for collection include primary school to tertiary level textbooks, storybooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias and assessments books.
Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice, said, “FairPrice Share-A-Textbook Project continues to serve the needs of the community, even as it reaches its 33rd year. This year, more than 400 volunteers from over 170 supporting partners have come together with FairPrice staff for this project. The volunteers assisted in logistics, promotional efforts, mass community collection, sorting and distribution for the Share-A-Textbook project.”
Some 20,000 students who have been registered under the priority scheme this year are expected to benefit from the textbooks. These students have been shortlisted by Volunteer Welfare Organisations (VWOs) and Community Development Councils (CDCs) for the scheme and are entitled to select their books on 12 December, a day earlier than the general public.
“We are heartened and grateful for the community’s support in coming together to generously donate their textbooks. This project benefits not only those who have received the books, but also those who have donated and volunteered, as giving back to society is an enriching experience and blessing in itself. We appreciate the support of members of the public, partners and volunteers who share the same goals with us in creating a better life for the community year after year,” added Mr Seah.
