NTUC FairPrice ramps up ongoing sustainability efforts with inaugural sustainability report and community engagement
- Community engagement campaign aims to promote awareness on sustainability, environment protection and volunteerism.
- Inaugural FairPrice Sustainability Report structures and explains FairPrice’s achievements and results in 2015, as well as future outlook.
- Call for the public to join FairPrice employees in volunteering activities and to reduce plastic bag usage; target to clock 5,500 hours in volunteerism and save 11 million plastic bags by the end of this year.
Singapore, 22 September 2016 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) today published its inaugural FairPrice Sustainability Report as part of a community engagement campaign to promote awareness on sustainability, environmental protection and volunteerism. The campaign includes an open invitation for the public to volunteer for charitable causes alongside its employees and targets to achieve 5,000 volunteer hours with an additional 500 volunteer hours from the public in 2016. In addition, FairPrice is also urging customers to bring-your-own-bag (BYOB) when they shop and collectively save 11 million plastic bags this year.
Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO of NTUC FairPrice, said, “FairPrice strives to incorporate sustainability practices in all aspects of our business and operations. The Report shares our sustainability journey and initiatives as well as account for the responsibilities we embrace towards caring for the economy, environment and society. Beyond this, we actively seek to engage the community in various sustainability efforts so that we may collaboratively make lives better for all.”
As part of the community engagement campaign, a limited edition abridged version of the report, called Sustainability Story Kit, will be made available to customers who sign up for the FairPrice Volunteer programme, BYOB at selected stores or participate in an online quiz on the Report.

FairPrice Sustainability Report
The FairPrice Sustainability Report, which will be published annually, structures and explains FairPrice’s achievements and results in 2015, as well as future outlook. It was developed based on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Core Guidelines - an internationally recognised standard on sustainability reporting. Data measurements from the Report is based on GRI G4 guidelines to ensure consistency and accuracy. Materiality assessments of the report were conducted in January this year to ensure its relevance to stakeholders.
The report highlights FairPrice’s four strategic CSR pillars, namely Responsible Retailing, Community Care, Sustainable Environment and Wonderful Workplace. It also details various specific initiatives undertaken in the 2015 financial year, many of which were launched several years ago, including procurement of products from sustainable sources, the FairPrice Share-A-Textbook project to promote recycling and aid low-income students, and the FairPrice Green Rewards Scheme to reduce plastic bag usage. FairPrice Volunteer Programme
FairPrice employees have contributed over 12,000 hours to the FairPrice Volunteer Programme since the initiative was launched in 2012. It is a ground-up initiative to encourage staff to give back to the community through volunteering activities such as packing and distributing food to those in need, as well as befriending the elderly and people with special needs by organising activities or bringing them out for excursions. Volunteers are equipped with practical knowledge of volunteerism and working with beneficiaries. The initiative has since clocked 2,300 hours in the first half of this year.
FairPrice Green Rewards Scheme
For the first half of this year, FairPrice has since saved 5.3 million plastic bags through its BYOB initiative, called the FairPrice Green Rewards Scheme. It aims to save 11 million plastic bags by the end of this year.
In 2015, FairPrice saved a record 10.1 million plastic bags through The FairPrice Green Rewards scheme, which was introduced in 2007. The Scheme offers customers a 10-cent rebate when customers BYOB with a minimum spend of $10.
