Singaporeans are becoming more health-conscious these days, and one of the most common trends that we're seeing now is a switch to a plant-based, vegetarian or vegan diet for various reasons.

It is believed that a meat-free lifestyle might reap benefits for our bodies, such as minimising inflammation which can cause pain, fatigue and insomnia. Other reasons behind why some of us are looking for meat alternatives and dairy-free options include a love for animals and our planet, as well as lactose intolerance.

This, in turn, has resulted in more demand for meat-free, vegetarian and vegan food options such as nut or bean milk, as well as plant-based burgers and nuggets. In Singapore, finding such options has become easier than before. According to a survey on plant-based food consumption in Singapore by Rakuten Insight, 33 per cent of respondents aged between 16 and 24 years stated they consumed plant-based food several times a year.

For meat-free newbies, options are aplenty these days — especially at FairPrice, where you'll find choices for different palates and preferences. And with Vesak Day coming up in May, there's no better time to try out plant-based, vegetarian and vegan options. No idea where to begin? Thankfully, FairPrice now offers over 30 plant-based brands such as Harvest Gourmet and Meat Zero. Ahead, some options to get you started.
