How to make your next BBQ party healthier

Barbecuing is always a fun affair for everybody. It presents a great opportunity for the whole family to mingle and have a delicious meal outdoors without much effort and time. Here are some suggestions on how to BBQ foods that are good for the body, mind and soul.

Choose fish over meat

Fishes are great for protein and many people don’t know this but there is a wide variety of fish that can be used when barbecuing such as tilapia, salmon, catfish and trout. One thing to take note is that fishes are usually harder to handle when grilled because of their soft texture so remember to cut the portions thicker. Alternatively, you may also wrap the fish up with aluminium foil or banana leave to keep it compact. Adding lemon juice along with herbs will also give the fish nice flavours when grilled well.

Picking the right meats

Most people look forward to the wide array of meats when barbecuing. For a healthier option, opt for chicken breasts over the thighs or legs as they are healthier and easier to cook. Remember to skin the meat first before barbecuing. If you would like to give it more flavour, you may try marinating it with lemon juice and vinegar before seasoning with salt and pepper. The best cooked chicken breasts are those that taste fresh and juicy!

Time to get fruity

Instead of munching away on chips, how about making it a healthier and fruitier occasion for all? Try grilling fruits such as bananas, peaches and grapes on its own or even glazing them with honey for those with a sweet tooth. These fruits contain a great deal of natural vitamins for kids and adults alike. These fruits also go great with fat-free yogurt as well as vanilla ice-cream as an alternative. Who says fruits have to be boring?

The charred bits bites

It is common to find charred bits when you are barbecuing and most people usually dismiss them as harmless and removing them a waste of time. However, research has shown that spending the extra time flaking the bits off might actually save your life someday. Charred food has more carcinogens that increases one’s chances of getting cancer. Grilled food should only be grilled till all the bacteria are killed without excess charring before consuming.

Getting picky on your sauces

Sauces are essential for BBQs. It is to BBQ food as wine is to cheese. However, before you go for the first bottle of thick BBQ sauce you see in the store, why not consider mixing up your own sauce which can be done easily with ingredients found in your kitchen for example marinating in spices and fun balsamic vinegars like olive oil. The extra effort will definitely make a difference in the long run.
